My Last Mistake - Final

“Chris...Chris, can you hear me?” I felt a strong coldness against my temple, causing me to flinch with pain and chills. I opened my eyes halfway to see my Lord standing by me. His arm was bandaged up, and he had a couple of bandages all over his cheeks. I held onto the towel which covered the ice pack, feeling my jaw ache with whatever hit me. Through a faint mumbled try, I managed to respond.

“Mmm, yeah,” It was barely a reply. I turned away a bit to spit out a tiny piece of a tooth. The pain overwhelmed me again, causing me to wince. As I reopened my eyes, I soon noticed Thanatos laying on the window seat, off into a deep sleep. Her whole upper body was covered in bandages, with burn marks on her face. That’s when I remembered the bright flash of fire before I passed out.

“She really took a hell of a lot of pain.” I looked back at Taker, who was calmly looking at Thanatos. “I was expecting to get a bigger fight than her...”

“...How many?” My jaw tensed up with the pain as I spoke. He looked at me from the corners of his eyes, and then looked back at Thanatos as he traced back his memory.

“There were 6.” He stroked his goatee for a moment as he recalled the battle. “After Thanatos took that shot of fire from the Saynt, she fought off two or three more. The guards and I were left with at least half of that.” It was hard to imagine a kid like Thanatos fight off three big Sayntz by herself.

“...They still here?” I winced through that question.

“No, of course not. Those bastards are gone for good. Unless you decide to make another sin like that.” He chuckled a bit at the thought, but it made me feel more humiliated.

“L-Lord, I am sorry...” I swallowed the small amount of blood in my mouth. “I got you two involved...” Taker paced to Thanatos, where he sat down by her head. He quietly watched her sleep, looking relaxed to know she is alright.

“It’s a hard road for all of us, especially newcomers,” He soon said. “Which is why we all stick together during situations like these. Nobody’s going to ever fight those creatures alone. Even I can’t.” He brushed Thanatos’s hair out of her face, causing her to twitch and turn over on her side. It made me smile, but only for a quick second with my jaw pain. After a couple minutes of silence, Taker rose to his feet and walked to the door.

“You two get rest tonight. I will speak with you in the morning.” Then he was gone. The room was entirely silent the rest of that night. I could barely sleep with all of the pain, relief, and amazement. However, listening to the light rain outside around 4 in the morning brought me into a deep sleep.

     I opened my eyes around 6 in the morning. The break of dawn barely revealed itself behind all of the clouds. During my sleep my icepack was switched. When I looked back at the window seat, Thanatos was still there. Only this time, she was awake, staring out the window.

“My father gets to see dawns like this all of the time,” she soon said to me quietly. “I’m usually too tired to watch the sky go from black to purple.”

“So different here...” I managed to say. I tried to relax my jaw, but the pain was still overwhelming.

“Your jaw’s going to hurt like that for a couple of days. Hard blows like that from Sayntz can leave most people mute.” I heaved a sigh listening to this. We can only hope I don’t remain like this for RAW...

“Speaking of which...Why did you decide to apologize to those mortals?”  She glanced right at me, seeming like her old curious self again.

“It’s the only way..-“ Winced, “To keep in touch with you and my Lord...” I gave my jaw a break for a moment. “Too devoted to the company...” Thanatos nodded her head, then looked out the window again.

“I see...”

“But don’t worry,” I soon added. “That incident was my last mistake...”
